How can I make sure that the domain name I want to register has not already been taken?

When using your browser, you can try to place the name in your browser and see if a website using that name already exists or if it "cannot be found." If you want a more definitive word of whether a domain name is registered, you can check the "Whois" database of registered names by using a search service or checking with one of the domain name registrars.
