Computer Law

Computers are everywhere, and they are changing the way we shop, work, and correspond.

At the click of a mouse, we can purchase goods and have them delivered to our homes. With the use of a modem, our home computers can connect us to our employers, in many cases eliminating the need to go to the office. Electronic mail enables us to communicate across long distances at less than the cost of a local phone call.

But with this technology come potential dangers. Just how secure are those online purchases? Can my employer eavesdrop on my Internet and e-mail use at the office? Is there any way to stem the mounting tide of unwanted e-mail I receive from advertisers? How can I safeguard the important messages and documents on my computer from viruses and hackers? Can I legally download anything available over the Internet, including music? Could I unwittingly enter into a contract online? Can I write anything I want on my personal website? What's to stop my kids from accessing sites I would rather they not visit? Is Big Brother watching?

This chapter examines how the law is responding, often slowly, to these issues and provides helpful hints to protect computer users from potential harm.
