Must I receive a cost estimate for the auto repairs before work actually begins?

Getting a cost estimate is always a good idea, and it may be required in some states. Some states may provide that the final cost of repairs cannot exceed a certain percentage or dollar value of the original estimate, unless the customer consents. Repair shops generally have the right to charge for making estimates, but you must receive advance notice of any such charge.
