What type of protection does the U.S. Constitution afford public employees?

The most important protections afforded by the U.S. Constitution (that are not duplicated by antidiscrimination laws already discussed) are

  • freedom of association,
  • freedom of speech,
  • freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures, and
  • due process protections in the event of discharge from a job.
