Unions in the Workplace

What rights do employees have under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA)?

The NLRA gives employees the right to

  • join unions;
  • engage in conduct aimed at promoting or helping unions;
  • choose a union to represent them in collective bargaining with their employer; and
  • engage in group conduct that has as its purpose collective bargaining or helping each other regarding workplace issues (this includes the right to strike).

    The law also says that employees have the right not to do these things if that is their desire.
