Intentional Wrongs

But isn't hitting someone a crime?

It can be. Conduct that forms the basis for an intentional tort can lead to both criminal and civil proceedings. In the above example, Jack can be criminally charged by the state and sued by Jill in a tort action. The state's action is criminal law, while Jill's action is a civil tort action.
