Do I need a lawyer to appeal the Social Security claim denial?

A lawyer is not required for an appeal. However, you should consider the complexity of your case and the amount of money you are seeking before deciding whether to hire one. If your appeal goes all the way to a federal court, you probably should have a lawyer to represent your interests. Lawyers who take Social Security cases usually receive up to 25 percent of your back benefits if the claim is successful. The SSA must approve the fees. An experienced advocate who is not a lawyer also can represent you.
