I have prescription drug coverage now. Do I have to drop it to enroll in Part D?
You do not have to remain enrolled in a Medicare Part D prescription plan if you have other prescription drug coverage that is equal to or greater than the Medicare Part D coverage. This is called creditable prescription drug coverage. Having creditable prescription drug coverage (and retaining documents proving that you do) will allow you to join a Medicare Part D plan at a later date and not be subjected to the late enrollment penalties.
