The Rights of Older Americans

A Right to Control Your Own Affairs

Representative Payees

If I regain my ability to control my own finances, may I dismiss a representative payee?

Yes. First you need to file a form with the Social Security Administration asking to take care of your own financial affairs. You must then notify the government agency of your wish to dismiss the representative payee, and the agency must determine that you have regained the capacity to manage your own benefits.
