What can I do if my neighbor is engaging in illegal activities?
First, if the problem is with tenants, contact the property owner, who may or may not know that the tenants are doing something illegal, such as selling illegal drugs. Some cities require such tenants to be evicted, or will fine landlords who allow such a nuisance to continue. In some cases, state and federal laws provide for the government to seize property that is being used for illegal financial gain. The threat of forfeiting the house to the government is likely to persuade the homeowner to evict the undesirable tenants. Another approach is for you and your neighbors to pursue a private lawsuit against a neighborhood nuisance. Neighbors can be a powerful, unifying force in these situations.
