Understanding Your Mortgage

What can I do if I have a problem with a mortgage servicer?

Contact your servicer in writing if you believe you shouldn't have been assessed a late penalty or for any other problem. Include your account number and explain why you think there was an error in your account.

The servicer must acknowledge your inquiry in writing within twenty business days, and it has sixty business days to either correct your account or explain why it is accurate. While you're waiting, don't withhold any disputed amount of mortgage payment, because that could count as a default on the mortgage.
