Choosing a Landlord

What information can I find about my landlord on the public record?

The Internet has made more information available more easily than ever before. A skillful surfer may discover

  • whether the landlord actually owns the building;
  • whether the landlord has ever been taken to court by the city, other tenants, or workmen the landlord has hired; and
  • if there is a record of complaints against the landlord.

    The regulatory consumer agencies in your area may maintain websites that record complaints and evaluate customer satisfaction. Also, newspapers frequently carry stories about landlords and tenants; those articles can be discovered on the Web. Some websites list bad landlords. Check these sites out by typing "bad landlords" into your favorite browser.

    For years, landlords have checked out tenants by using computerized credit reports. Now the tenant can check out the landlord.
