What is the Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act?

In response to the civil rights movement of the 1960s, the federal government funded a legal services project to draft a model residential landlord-tenant code. From this model code the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws drafted the Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act (URLTA) in 1972. The American Bar Association approved this act in 1974. Subsequently, many states and municipalities have passed statutes or ordinances based upon this act.
