- Alimony can be given for different time periods and for different purposes—including:
- temporary or rehabilitative alimony to serve as a transition and to give the recipient an opportunity to improve her (or his) economic condition;
- permanent alimony to provide indefinite support, especially of the recipient is never likely to be self-supporting or earn an income approaching the spouse’s income; and
- reimbursement alimony to pay back money expended to help the other spouse, such as putting a spouse through professional school or a training program.
