Preparing a Written Narrative

  • Some attorneys will ask their clients to write a narrative statement about the marriage and divorce. Such a statement might include descriptions of:
  • significant events in the marriage,
  • reasons for the divorce,
  • child-raising responsibilities,
  • contributions each party made to the marriage (financial, homemaking, or both),
  • good qualities and bad qualities about each party,
  • your short-term and long-term goals and reasons for them; and
  • your perceptions of your spouse’s short-term and long terms goals and the reasons for them.

A written narrative may help both you and your attorney understand the issues better, and may be a cathartic proces
