CHAPTER THREE

Same-Sex Marriages , Civil Unions and Domestic Partnerships

Tina and Megan have lived together in a committed relationship for three years. They would like to make their relationship more “official” and have the protections of the law that are similar to the protections that married couples have. What are their options?

In 2003, the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts ruled that persons of the same sex had the same right to marry as persons of different sex. In the case of Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, seven couples of the same sex who were described by the court as being in “a committed relationship” sought to obtain marriage licenses, but were not able to do so because state statutes did not recognize same-sex marriages.
