Preventing Falls in The Home

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in older Americans and the leading cause of non-fatal injuries to children up to fourteen years old. Although little (other than paying close attention and wearing proper footwear) can be done to avoid falls in places like supermarkets-where slippery lettuce leaves may lurk around the corner in the produce aisle, there are steps you can take to avoid falling at home. Take the following quiz to find out how safe you are in your home. The more "True" responses you have, the safer you are.

True or False

The rooms in my home are arranged to allow for an easy traffic pattern that does not require me to walk around furniture.

I do not have throw rugs on the floor, and area rugs are secured with a non-slip pad or double-sided tape.

I do not store or stack items on the floor or stairs.

All electrical cords are safely out of areas where I walk.

My home is well lighted, especially the stairways and hallways.

I have light switches at both ends of my stairways and hallways.

My stairs have no loose or uneven treads, and all stairway carpet is securely fastened.

All stairways inside and outside of my home have sturdy handrails.

I never use an unsteady step stool or ladder.

I have a lamp close to my bed so I can turn it on before rising.

My tub/shower has a non-slip surface.

I exercise regularly to keep myself in top physical condition.

I use extra caution when I have taken medication that may make me dizzy or drowsy and when I have consumed alcohol.

I wear my glasses or contacts whenever I am moving about, if required.

I wear non-slip shoes or slippers around the house.

My children are blocked from stairways by closed doors and/or securely latched safety gates.

My children's bunk bed has secure side rails and a sturdy ladder.

My baby uses a stationary exercise "chair" rather than a walker.

All windows in my home are secured by bars or other protective devices to prevent a child from falling through them.
