DEFINITION

• Consumer protection statutes called "lemon laws" allow a new car's owner to get a refund or a replacement vehicle when the new car has a major problem that is not repaired by the dealer or manufacturer within a reasonable time.

• Specific requirements vary by state, but most lemon laws require a complete refund or replacement if the defect is not resolved after a set number of repair attempts, or if the car has been out of use for a certain period of time.
