Legal Dictionary: Native Peoples Law

Native peoples law concerns not just American Indians within the contiguous United States, but also native Alaskans and native Hawaiians. Native peoples, and the laws concerning them, occupy a unique position in the legal world due to the historically significant relationship between these peoples and the United States government. Native peoples tribes are considered to be independent entities with a right to self-governance, although Congress is vested with a limited power to regulate the status and rights of the tribes. The federal government also has the power to protect the tribes and their properties from improper infringement by the states or by other entities.
