A lawyer who represents the state in a criminal case is usually a District Attorney; a lawyer who represents the state in civil cases is usually an Assistant Attorney General. A lawyer who is appointed by the court to represent a defendant in a criminal case because the defendant is too poor to hire a lawyer is usually a Public Defender.
